Some animals arrive frightened and unsure of people. Others have suffered neglect, injury or abandonment. At Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre, we believe their circumstances should never determine their worth or how much time they deserve to recover. As a Right to Life shelter, we provide animals with a place of safety for as long as they need it, and euthanasia is considered only when suffering makes it the most humane option.
Since 1999, our rescue centre near Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng, has become a refuge for dogs, cats, horses, donkeys and other farm animals. Our work focuses on rehabilitation, veterinary care and responsible adoption, with individual attention to each animal’s physical and emotional needs. Some recover quickly and are ready for a new family, while others require extended treatment, patient rehabilitation or long-term sanctuary.
We believe adoption should begin with a genuine understanding of the animal. A successful match considers temperament, exercise requirements, household circumstances and the responsibilities of lifelong pet ownership. Our adoption process includes applications and property assessments to help ensure animals move into safe, suitable homes. We also provide veterinary examinations, vaccinations, sterilisation, microchipping and other preventative treatments as part of our adoption programme.
Our Equestrian Centre, established in 2019, allows us to extend our rescue work to horses, donkeys and farm animals who have experienced neglect or hardship. These animals often have specialised nutritional, medical and environmental requirements, and their rehabilitation can demand considerable time and resources. Our aim is to give them the same dignity, protection and opportunity for recovery that we provide to the dogs and cats in our care.
We also recognise that animal welfare begins long before an animal reaches a shelter. Through our Animal Clinic, we provide affordable veterinary services to the community, while our educational initiatives encourage responsible ownership and greater awareness of animal welfare. Proceeds from our clinic and other onsite activities contribute towards the care of our rescue animals.
Life at Wet Nose depends on the dedication of our staff, volunteers and supporters. Volunteers help walk, groom and socialise animals, assist with kennel and stable care, and support adoption events. These interactions are especially valuable for animals who spend extended periods at the shelter, as regular attention and positive experiences contribute to their comfort and wellbeing.
We receive no government or municipal funding, so public support plays a significant role in our survival. Donations, kennel and stable sponsorships, fundraising initiatives and support for our onsite facilities help cover veterinary treatment, food, shelter maintenance and everyday care. Every contribution allows us to continue providing a safe refuge for animals who have nowhere else to turn.
