For many animals in the southern Cape Peninsula, access to veterinary care, sterilisation and a safe home can mean the difference between a life of hardship and a healthier future. At TEARS Animal Rescue, we work to address these challenges at their source, with a strong focus on the communities where poverty and limited access to animal healthcare place pets at greater risk.
Established in 1999, TEARS Animal Rescue is a registered nonprofit organisation based in Sunnydale, Cape Town. Our work extends into neighbouring communities, including Masiphumelele, Ocean View and Red Hill, where we assist vulnerable animals and their owners through rescue services, veterinary care and community outreach.
One of the most important aspects of our work is our commitment to accessible animal healthcare. Many pet owners care deeply for their animals but struggle to afford basic veterinary services. Through our veterinary clinic and outreach initiatives, we help address this gap with sterilisation, vaccinations, parasite control and subsidised medical treatment for qualifying households. Our aim is to prevent avoidable suffering, reduce unwanted litters and help families provide better care for the animals already in their homes.
Our kennels and cattery provide refuge for dogs and cats who have been abandoned, surrendered, neglected or rescued from difficult circumstances. Some arrive in urgent need of medical attention, while others require time, patience and rehabilitation before they are ready for adoption. We recognise that every animal has different needs, and their recovery depends on appropriate care, positive experiences and individual attention.
We place considerable importance on responsible rehoming. Our adoption team helps prospective adopters understand the personalities, requirements and histories of the animals in our care, with the goal of creating suitable, lasting matches. We want families to feel prepared for the responsibilities of adoption and each animal to have the best possible chance of a secure future.
Our work within local communities is equally important. Animal welfare challenges cannot be addressed through rescue alone, particularly where financial hardship, limited veterinary services and uncontrolled breeding contribute to recurring problems. We believe that education, sterilisation and practical assistance can help reduce the number of animals who ultimately require shelter.
Behind our daily operations is a dedicated network of staff, volunteers, donors and supporters. From the people who walk and socialise our rescue dogs to those who assist with fundraising and provide financial support, our community helps us care for animals at the shelter while extending our services to those who might otherwise go without help.
At TEARS, our vision is closely connected to the wellbeing of both animals and the communities in which they live. By combining direct rescue work with accessible healthcare and education, we aim to create lasting improvements in animal welfare throughout the areas we serve.
