For over five decades, the Animal Welfare Society Port Elizabeth has been a voice for animals who cannot speak for themselves. Established in 1971, our organisation was born from a growing concern for the stray, neglected and vulnerable animals of Port Elizabeth. Today, that same sense of responsibility drives our work throughout Nelson Mandela Bay, where we believe every animal deserves compassion, protection and the opportunity for a better life.
Our shelter in Walmer offers refuge to animals who have been abandoned, surrendered or rescued from difficult circumstances. Some need urgent medical attention, while others simply need patience, reassurance and a safe place to recover. As an open shelter, we accept animals in need and do our best to provide the care they deserve. Our Inspectorate also responds to reports of cruelty and neglect around the clock, ensuring animals in distress have someone to turn to.
We know that many animal welfare challenges are closely linked to financial hardship and limited access to veterinary care. Through our onsite animal hospital and twice-weekly Walmer Township Clinic, we provide practical assistance to pet owners who might otherwise struggle to afford treatment. Sterilisation, preventative healthcare and community education are especially important to us because we believe that preventing suffering is every bit as valuable as responding to it.
Our commitment to animals also extends to the people who love them. We help reunite lost pets with their families, find suitable homes for animals in our care and offer compassionate pet cremation services when families face the loss of a beloved companion. Each of these moments reminds us how deeply animals are woven into people’s lives.
As a nonprofit organisation, our work depends on the generosity of our community. From the volunteers who spend time with our shelter animals to those who support our Wagtails Charity Shop, donate or sponsor our work, every contribution helps us continue a mission that began over 50 years ago. Together, we can build a community where animals are treated with the kindness, dignity and respect they deserve.
