A Boston Terrier may be small in size, but anyone familiar with the breed knows just how much personality, energy and affection these dogs can bring into a home. At Boston Terrier Rescue South Africa (BTRSA), we share a particular love for these distinctive little companions and have built a nationwide volunteer network dedicated to their welfare.
Our organisation rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes Boston Terriers who have been abandoned, neglected, surrendered or left without suitable care. Some come to us because their owners face financial difficulties, emigration, illness or changes in family circumstances. Others need assistance after behavioural difficulties or challenging experiences. We understand that surrendering a much-loved pet can be an emotional decision, and we approach each situation with compassion and a commitment to the dog’s future.
Unlike traditional animal shelters, we do not operate a central rescue facility. Our work depends on volunteer foster families across South Africa who open their homes to Boston Terriers in need. These temporary homes provide a familiar household environment where dogs can receive individual attention, settle into a routine and have their personalities and needs assessed before adoption.
We take particular care with the adoption process because Boston Terriers have individual temperaments, preferences and requirements. Prospective adopters complete an application, provide information about their household and undergo a home assessment. We arrange introductions where appropriate and aim to match each dog with a family capable of providing a safe, stable and permanent home.
Responsible rehoming also means helping owners before a situation becomes urgent. When foster space is unavailable, we may assist through our rescue network while a dog remains with its current family. We work alongside shelters and SPCAs where possible and encourage owners to plan ahead, as a suitable adoption can take weeks or months.
Veterinary care and sterilisation are important parts of our work. Through our Sponsor Me initiative, supporters can contribute towards sterilisation procedures for Boston Terriers in need. Donations also help cover veterinary bills, food and practical supplies for dogs in foster care.
Our work is made possible by volunteers, foster families and supporters who understand the special place these dogs hold in people’s lives. Every suitable home, thoughtful adoption and contribution to their care helps us continue our mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome Boston Terriers across South Africa.
